Current Project: Emergency ShelterÂ
The Wanda Alston Foundation is working on creating a safe space for homeless or at-risk LGBTQ youth. As summer turns to fall and the weather gets cooler, this space becomes even more important. Existing city shelters are often hostile environments for LGBTQ youth in the DC metro area. We are in the process of opening a second house, an emergency shelter available 24/7 for young people who need a safe space, whether they have been forced to leave their homes or choosing to leave an unhealthy situation. This emergency shelter will fill in the gap between these youth and our current transitional housing program, the Wanda Alston House. In the past year, youth from the Wanda Alston House program have returned to high school and graduated while another has found stable employment and housing. Others have enrolled in college and continue to grow. We ask for your contribution to help us achieve our next goal, the creation of a safe emergency shelter for homeless or at-risk LGBTQ youth.
